About Katherine Smith

Hello Van Alstyne families!

I am excited to be your school nurse at Van Alstyne Elementary for the second year.  I have been a registered nurse since 1992.  Before joining VAISD, I worked in ICU/CCU, ER, and pediatrics.

My husband Dennis and I have five children in grades 1, 3, 7, 10 and 11, all in Van Alstyne schools.  As you can tell, I have a vested interest in making our school the best it can be!

Each year we screen our Pre-K, kindergarten, 1st and 3rd graders' vision and hearing.  First and third graders are also checked for a pre-diabetes skin marker called acanthosis nigricans.   The other nurses and I work hard to make sure all children get the care they need.  I love working with parents, teachers and coaches to make sure our kids stay healthy so they can do their best in school.

If you have any concerns or questions about your child's health, please feel free to call me at 903-482-8826 or email me at krsmith@ednet10.netYou can find answers to common questions, helpful links, and school-related forms by checking our blog, VAISDHealthClinic.

I'm looking forward to getting to know your children and working with you to help them stay healthy this year!
